My Story
Flashback to little Deepa growing up in Chennai, India…
Watch me sneak into my mum’s cosmetics to play with what was a wild palette for a 1980s woman. My eyes widen in delight seeing her pair tangerine lips with an orange sari. I love make up like I crave my Patti’s (grandmother) thali dishes. A doctor (and a goddess to me), my mum is a huge inspiration for POC Beauty.
I grew up in a time when being fair-skinned was perceived as beautiful. People would use brightening creams in the scorching tropical weather to lighten their skin. I’m grateful that the message I received at home was that my skin was perfect, just the way it was.
My childhood was flavoured with coconut oil scalp massages, tawa-cooked roti, South-Indian thali meals, turmeric lattes when I was sick and fortnightly ginger shots for a good cleanse. It’s these simple practices that make me what I am today.
What I've learned
As a classical dancer camera front and on stage, make up is layered on daily like Vegemite on toast. I know melanin-rich skin has distinct challenges that don’t fit the mould. That self care is a key beauty element. That the colour of my skin defines who I am.
Skin care and make up for dark skin
Inclusive beauty and skin products for people proud of their colour – that’s my dream, shared by people of colour around the world.
We want to see our colour and culture represented in the beauty world with accessible, skin products that meet our distinct needs.
An intersection of my culture, journey and passion, POC Beauty is a bold beacon of diversity.
